Jane Addams Middle School
Week of April 5, 2021
Dear Families,
We are looking forward to welcoming our Distinct, Moderate and SEL qualified students back to in-person school tomorrow and preparations are underway for all students who would like to return to in-person school on April 19.
As a reminder on April 5, 6, and 7 all educators will return to the Jane Addams building to prepare for the return of all other students. There will be no live classes for students on these days, with the exception of our students in the Distinct, Moderate and SEL programs. Students should log into Schoology each day to learn about the work for the day.
Since the Seattle Public Schools survey is now due Tuesday, April 6 by 11pm, we will hold an information session tomorrow evening at 7pm. See below for details. The event will be recorded and uploaded to our website. We will also host our previously scheduled event on Thursday to review specifics for those families that have selected in-person learning.
While we don't have all the answers and details right now for how educators will balance in-person and remote learning in the afternoons, we are committed to updating you as plans take shape and to center each family's decision in our planning. We are working with four core instructional values as we plan for the return of in-person learning:
Community
Class activities that help build and support community
Sustainability
Creating structures during this time that support both student and educator social and emotional well being
Intentionality
We will be intentional in our planning to ensure that 100% of the class time is well spent
We will use student feedback to adjust our plans as needed
Engagement and Fun
We will support students in engaging with school, peers, educators and academics with specific focus by grade levels.
We realize that the final decision to return to in-person school by April 15 has happened suddenly, that there are still many questions and this is not an easy decision for families. We will continue to work towards as much clarity as we can and are committed to continuing to provide the best experience possible for our students be it in-person or remote.
I have included a tentative bell schedule below for in-person learning to help clarify.
Students will be in one of three "Cohorts."
Cohort A= In-Person on Monday and Tuesday afternoons
Cohort B= In-Person on Thursday and Friday afternoons
Cohort C= All remote
Coyote North Spring Break Classes
The week of April 12 is Spring Break. Our community partner, Coyote North, still has space in some amazing remote arts courses designed for middle school students. See below for details. It is pay what you can so that every student has an opportunity to take part.
I look forward to connecting with you all on Monday and Thursday evenings,
Take care,
Paula
