Kleb Intermediate
Edition 15: January 4, 2021
Hello Bearcub families,
Happy New Year to all our Bearcubs and Bearcub families!
We hope that everyone had a wonderful winter break and got to spend lots of time with family doing the things that bring you joy. Our spring semester is always jammed packed with activities and we can not wait to get our Bearcubs back on campus and see them online so that we can continue our journey of learning for this year.
As we begin our new year, we wanted to give a couple of academic reminders as everyone returns to campus this week. In years past we have concluded quarter two and semester one in December prior to leaving before winter break, however with the delayed start, quarter two & semester one will end on January 15th this year. The fourth progress report marking period grades will pull tomorrow and should be finalized in Skyward by the end of the week. There will also be some assessments that our students will be gearing up to take in the spring including the middle of the year MAP growth check, semester finals, and STARR simulations. For the STAAR simulations, we will include lots of information in upcoming newsletters that will talk about what they looks like for both our on campus and online students prior to those simulations being administered.
Spring is also an exciting time for our students as they start planning for next year and thinking about what courses they would like to take. This is especially true for our 8th graders as they will be "graduating" middle school and moving on to high school soon! To help our students with this process and transition we will be doing a couple of things as a campus and district. On January 19th, we will begin working with students in den on choosing their courses for next year. During the first week of February counselors will be in the students science courses to help them input their choices into the system. The time period in between January 19th and February 4th is a great opportunity for parents and students to have conversations about how their courses are currently going, what interests them, and what their courses should look like for next year. Parents, there will be informational opportunities to learn about courses through campus websites, district Facebook live events, and a district website that will house videos for all incoming 6th graders and 9th graders on our Virtual Open House Event. We will pushing out lots of information soon so that families feel confident about their students courses for the upcoming year.
We are looking forward to another fabulous week and as always, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to our staff.

Campus Sporting Events
This includes: With limited capacity rules and following Klein's guidelines for all Intermediate campuses, we will be restricting our spectators to our participants/athletes, the parents, grandparents, & siblings of the athletes, and the season pass holders. We are limiting our spectators in an effort to ensure that family members have an opportunity to watch their student's play. Spectators must present their pre-paid tickets at the entry gate for each game to order to enter. A limited number of tickets will also be available for family members to purchase at the game but on a first come, first serve basis. Families will be required to sit together and socially distance themselves from other families. There will also be some special procedures for spectators at the on campus facilitates.
Please note, all spectators must wear a mask for the entirety of time while on campus. We appreciate everyone following this rule so we can continue to hold games!
We are continuing to look for opportunities to be able to invite students and other community members to the games once we are able to accommodate everyone safely or there is an adjustment to the Intermediate campus guidelines.

BEARCUBS OF THE WEEK
6th Grade: Dyshon Washington Jr.
Dyshon is a Kleb CUB as he is a positive leader in the classroom! Dyshon shows up to class on-time every day with a contagious smile on his face and a great attitude! He is a hard worker, stand out scholar, and a fast friend! He makes us proud as a Bearcub!
7th Grade: Danica Blackhurst
Danica is one of the kindest students a teacher could ever have. She is always willing to help the teacher and her peers. She is also willing to accept feedback and try again. We enjoy having her in our classrooms because she is a positive influence on everyone around her, actively participates, and is all about using her growth mindset to get better each day.
8th Grade: Jamall Dartez Jr.
Jamal is a values-driven leader. He is grateful, kind, polite, and acts with integrity. A great addition to Kleb!
Student Information
KOC Reminder
Beginning Monday, November 9th, if your student is coded as a KOC (Klein On-Campus) student the expectation is that the student attends campus daily for instruction. If a student is unable to attend campus, then they will be counted absent for the day. The student will be allowed to work asynchronously through Schoology, but will not be allowed to attend Zoom. If a KOC student needs to access instruction synchronously for absences that extend beyond one day, then the parent will need to contact the attendance office by 3pm by email (dbanks1@kleinisd.net) or through Skyward messaging for administration to approve for the following day. The change comes in an effort to reduce the daily back and forth transitions that are occurring on campus, which the data and feedback shows is reducing learning outcomes and is burning the teachers out with the inconsistencies. Our hope is to get closer to a sense of normalcy, as best as possible, in our current conditions.
KOL Reminder
For our KOL (Klein Online) students, families received a notification from district asking to confirm their student’s mode of instruction for the second quarter. If families would like to switch their students from online to on campus, the form took them to the mode of instruction change request, which can be found here as well. If families wanted their students to remain online, then the form asked them to review and sign an attestation form that included online guidelines and processes for students and parents to follow to help make the online learning experience successful for their students. Our campus will be using those guidelines as well to help support students and in our communication with families about their students current progress and growth opportunities. Students that do not follow these expectations will be removed from the Zoom room
Students who have trouble with their technology need to go asynchronous for the day, contact their teacher, and submit a Student & Family Tech Support Ticket

Online Testing Guidelines
- Be present on Zoom at the time of the class to take the test and remain in class the entire period. If a student is not present online during the class on test day, they will have to arrange a time with the teacher to take a make-up test. If all testing opportunities are missed, then a zero would be recorded in the grade book for that test.
- Have their cameras on with the student's face in view. Students must have their cameras on the entire time they are testing. If not, teachers will give the students reminders to turn it on before exiting them from the Zoom. Students that begin the test and then turn off their cameras or leave may cause their test to become invalidated.
- Ensure their testing environment is free from distractions and communicate with their teacher if they are having any issues.
Zoom Participation Guidelines:
In order to help support our students more effectively and manage our Zoom/Online classrooms, we have implemented the following guidelines that will be required in order to participate in Zoom.
- Students need to follow the dress code when online with their teacher and/or classmates
- Students will need to make sure to use their first and last name as their screen name in order to be let in from the waiting room
- Students will need to leave their cameras on for the entire time while in the Zoom session unless there are extenuating circumstances that does not allow them to do so. If those circumstances exist, then the student or parent needs to contact their teacher to let them know.
Students may use the Chat feature for topics related to the lesson or to communicate with the teacher.
Students need to be participating in a conducive work environment, for example, students should not be Zooming in from a vehicle.
Parents, please note, that our Zooms are considered part of our classrooms. Our campus is diligently working to create a cohesive classroom environment and provide our online students an opportunity to engage with both the teacher and other students. If you need to contact one of our staff members for questions or support, we ask that you email or call them so that they can reach out and address any issues.

Dress Code Highlights
Cell Phone Policy: Pulled from the 2020-2021 Klein ISD Student Handbook
Electronic Devices and Technology Resources (All Grade Levels) Possession and Use of Personal Telecommunications Devices, Including Mobile Telephones: The district permits students to possess personal cell phones for safety purposes; however, these devices must remain turned off during the instructional day, including during all testing, unless they are being used for approved instructional purposes.
A student must have approval to possess other personal telecommunications devices such as laptops, tablets, or other portable computers. Students are not permitted to possess or use personal electronic devices at school unless prior permission has been obtained. Without such permission, teachers will collect the items and turn them in to the principal’s office. The principal will determine whether to return items to students at the end of the day or to contact parents to pick up the items. The use of mobile telephones or any device capable of capturing images is strictly prohibited in locker rooms or restroom areas while at school or at a school-related or school-sponsored event. If a student uses a telecommunications device without authorization during the school day, the device will be confiscated. The parent may pick up the confiscated telecommunications device from the principal’s office.
Please reference the Student Handbook for more information about cell phones and acceptable technology use.
Attendance Procedures
Regular school attendance is essential for a student to make the most of his or her education—to benefit from teacher-led and school activities, to build each day’s learning on the previous day’s, and to grow as an individual. Absences from class may result in serious disruption of a student’s mastery of the instructional materials; therefore, the student and parent should make every effort to avoid unnecessary absences.
Did you know you can now report an absence in Skyward? Click HERE for more information.
Any student who is absent for the whole day is required to produce one of the following within 5 days of their absence(s):
· Parent Note
· Parent email (within 5 days of absence)
· Original medical note (copies or altered notes will not be accepted)
· Faxed notes must be sent from physician’s office
· Court note
· Official note for observance of approved religious holy days
***If a student is absent for part of the day for a doctor appointment, their absence will be coded as Section 25 (temporary absence) if the student follows the following procedure: The student must return the doctor excuse to the Attendance Office immediately upon returning to school to receive the Section 25 coding for their absence.
If a student does not produce one of the items listed above within the allotted timeframe, that absence will be considered unexcused and counted toward their total semester absences.
Klein ISD takes attendance very seriously, and we want to see your child succeed at Kleb. If you have any questions regarding attendance, please feel free to contact the attendance office at 832-249-5495 or reach out to your assistant principal.
Additional attendance information can be found starting on page 36 of the 20-21 Student Handbook.
