Histotripsy for Liver Cancer & Tumors

What Is Histotripsy?

An innovative non-invasive treatment for liver tumors. Histotripsy uses focused ultrasound waves to precisely destroy cancer cells in the liver without needles or incisions. Research demonstrates that other normal structures in the liver including blood vessels and bile ducts can remain unharmed while destroying the cancer cells around them using histotripsy.  These procedures can be performed without disrupting chemotherapy or other treatments and have been shown to have minimal side effects. This new treatment has been FDA-approved for the treatment of liver tumors.

Who Is a Candidate for Histotripsy?

Any patient with liver tumors is a potential candidate for histotripsy. This includes tumors that have formed within the liver or those that have spread to the liver from other organs. Examples include:

  • Colon Cancer
  • Rectal Cancer
  • Breast Cancer
  • Neuroendocrine Tumors
  • Sarcoma / Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor
  • Hepatocellular Carcinoma
  • Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma
  • Liver Metastases

What Are the Benefits of Histotripsy?

  • Non-Invasive / No Incisions
  • No Ionizing Radiation
  • Preserves Normal Liver Structures
  • Highly Effective
  • Faster Procedure
  • Minimal Recovery Time

Innovative Technology

Histotripsy is performed at Northeast Georgia Medical Center using Edison® – a sophisticated robotic ultrasound platform that delivers precise pulsed sound energy into the body, without any incisions or needles, and can destroy tumors at the intracellular level. Our highly trained physicians tailor each treatment to your tumor(s) and can perform multiple treatments if needed. Each histotripsy treatment is performed under anesthesia to help ensure complete treatment of the tumor(s).
