Global Fellows Categories
- Global and Senior Global Research Fellows are tenured or tenure-track academics with a demonstrable background of strong legal scholarship. More senior academics (for example, faculty members tenured for ten years or more) may be designated as Senior Global Research Fellows at the discretion of the selection committee.
- Global and Senior Global Fellows from Practice & Government are government officials, judges, officials from international organizations and lawyers in private practice who wish to take a semester or academic year away from their posts to engage in serious scholarship. More experienced officials and practitioners may be designated as Senior Global Fellows from Practice & Government at the discretion of the selection committee.
- Post-Doctoral Global Fellows are postdoctoral scholars who have attained their doctoral degrees within the past four years (of the application deadline) and who have not yet secured a tenure-track academic appointment at an institution. Certain Post-Doctoral Global Fellows meeting these eligibility requirements may be considered for a merit-based postdoctoral stipend. In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the stipend for this position is US$50,000 for the academic year (or US$25,000 per academic semester), subject to any applicable tax(es). The rate is based on an expected duration of nine months for the academic year (or four to five months for the academic semester).
- Emile Noël Fellows are postdoctoral or tenured academics with a demonstrable background of legal scholarship on the themes prioritized by the Jean Monnet Center for International and Regional Economic Law & Justice.
Program Details
Application Deadline
The deadline for receipt of Global Fellows Program application and application materials to participate in the 2024-2025 academic year is January 15, 2024. Except as noted below, applications must be received and completed by this date in order to be considered for participation in the Global Fellows Program for the upcoming year.
Please note that should space still remain available in mid-April, we may at our sole discretion consider applications received past the initial deadline. Strong preference is however given to applications received and completed by the initial deadline.

Eligibility
The Global Fellows Program is open to foreign nationals and to US and dual-nationality citizens who are teaching, working or studying outside of the US. Preference is given to applicants who intend to visit for the academic year.
Residency Requirement & Expectations
Global Fellowship visits are for:
- Full academic year (September 1, 2024 - May 31, 2025); or
- Fall semester only (September 1, 2024 - December 31, 2024); or
- Spring semester only (January 1, 2025 - May 31, 2025).
The fellowship may not be extended (or renewed) beyond one academic year. All Global Fellows are expected to be in full-time residence during their appointment. They may not hold any concurrent appointment or engagement (i.e. practice, fellowships, teaching, etc.) during the full period of residency.
Center Affiliation & Faculty Sponsor
Please note that an applicant's selection of center/institute affiliation is an important part of the application process. Fellows are required to affiliate with one of the specialized centers or institutes at NYU School of Law that closely aligns with their research project. Affiliation means the fellow is included in the center or institute’s activities and may be given an affiliated title. Applicants must indicate their preference for center/institute affiliation on the application. Further information about each center and institute may be found at the Centers & Institutes Page.
Each fellow will be assigned a Faculty Sponsor at the NYU School of Law following admission to the Program. If an applicant believes that one or more NYU faculty members would be especially well suited to serve as a faculty sponsor, the applicant may include the NYU faculty member's name(s) at the end of her/his/their research proposal (please refer to "4. Research Proposal" in the "Application Instructions" section). Please be advised however that we cannot guarantee any applicant's choice of a faculty sponsor.
Global/Emile Noël Fellows Forum
Through the Global/Emile Noël Fellows Forum, Global Fellows share their research with colleagues, students and faculty and receive comment and feedback. In this way, they contribute to the intellectual life of the Law School and provide an opportunity for the community to learn about current law research from a global perspective and in a wide range of topics. The primary goal of the Global Fellows Program is the enhancement of research and it is expected that participation in the Program will result in a substantial publishable piece of scholarship. All fellows are required to attend and present their research project at the Global/Emile Noël Fellows Forum.
Program Activity Fees
The fee for participating is US$7,500 per academic year (US$3,750 per semester). Requests for partial fee reduction may be granted to those who cannot afford to pay the full fee. More information regarding partial fee reduction will be provided following admission to the Program.
Post-Doctoral Stipend Information & Additional Funding
Certain Post-Doctoral Global Fellows meeting eligibility requirements may be considered for a merit-based, postdoctoral stipend during the appointment period, at the sole discretion of the selection committee. In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the stipend for this position is US$50,000 for the academic year (or US$25,000 per academic semester), subject to any applicable tax(es). The rate is based on an expected duration of nine months for the academic year (or four to five months for the academic semester).
In order to be considered for a merit-based, postdoctoral stipend, the applicant must (1) be a recent postdoctoral scholar (having attained the doctorate degree within four years of the application deadline) without a tenure-track academic appointment at an institution; and (2) indicate in the (A) online application form and (B) Statement(s) of Funding (please refer to "5. Statement(s) of Funding" in the "Application Instructions" section) that the applicant wishes to be considered for a merit-based, postdoctoral stipend. Please note that we offer a very limited number of these merit-based, postdoctoral stipends per year. ALL applicants are encouraged to supplement their participation in the Global Fellows Program by seeking scholarships and grants from other organizations. More information will be provided following admission to the Program.
Health Insurance
All participants must have adequate health insurance to cover them and any family members who will accompany them during their stay in the United States. Participants in the Global Fellows Program must make arrangements for health insurance before they arrive in the United States so that they are covered as from their date of arrival. More information on obtaining local coverage will be provided following admission to the Program.
Visa Information
The Global Fellows Program will sponsor the relevant J-1 visa for admitted candidates who require, and are eligible for, such visa sponsorship to enter and remain in the US for the duration of their appointment. Candidates who do not need J-1 visa sponsorship should be able to demonstrate the basis on which they will enter the US.
It is important to note that proof of funding or assets in the amount of at least US$2,800 per month of residence in the US will be required for J-1 visa sponsorship. Visas can be issued to spouses and children, provided that fellows can demonstrate they possess a minimum of US$1,000/month to support the spouse and US$500/month per child for the duration of the visit. Please be advised that US visa policies and regulations may be subject to change from time to time. Further information regarding visa requirements will be provided following admission to the Program.
Housing
Please be advised that NYU School of Law does not provide reserved housing for Global Fellows. All Global Fellows will receive more information regarding general housing resources in the New York City area following admission to the Program; regrettably, our office staff members are unable to assist individuals in finding housing.
