Cap and Gown Care Instructions:

Fairleigh Dickinson University uses GreenWeaver® graduation gowns as part of the ongoing effort to “Go Green.” Each gown is made of 25 recycled plastic bottles. This new fabric is softer to the touch and more breathable than traditional polyester fabric.  This year’s graduating class will help to divert approximately 40,000 plastic bottles from landfills.

For the best appearance, the academic gown should be removed from the package immediately and placed on a hanger to allow the folds to fall out.  Hanging it in a high-humidity area (shower) will accelerate this process. If you wish to press, turn inside out and press with a warm, NOT HOT, iron.  Steaming is also an option.  The commencement regalia is yours to keep.

Getting Ready for the Big Day:

  • If you are starting to think about what you are going to wear to commencement, please keep in mind the importance of comfort, particularly in footwear. In addition to standing for a bit before the processional begins and as the graduates are called to the stage, you will also be walking down a set of stairs as you leave the stage from having your name read.
  • If you are a graduate who will need disability-related accommodations to participate in the commencement ceremony, please contact the Disability Support Services Office at your home campus. The telephone number for the Florham Campus DSS Office is (973) 443-8079 and the telephone number for the Metropolitan Campus DSS Office is (201) 692-2078.

Name Cards:

  • You will receive a preprinted card with your name on it when you receive your regalia. Be sure to keep this card in a safe place as you will need to bring it with you to the ceremony. Please complete the section on the card that asks for the phonetic pronunciation of your name as well as the back of the card. This information will allow the photographer who will be taking your picture before going on stage to have your name read to send you the proofs and ordering information after the ceremony.
  • If you had your regalia shipped to home, your preprinted name card will be available for you to pick up the day of the ceremony at the check-in table.
