UK-wide Clinical Trials led by the University of Oxford Overview

The University of Bolton’s collaboration with the University of Oxford's Principle Trial in helping to find treatments for Covid-19, has moved at pace to help with a new line of enquiry in the UK-wide and high priority Panoramic Trial involving new antiviral agents.

The University of Bolton is excited to be supporting the PANORAMIC Trial via its team of ‘Student Champions and Ambassadors’, who are helping to encourage volunteers from Bolton and its surrounding areas to take part in the study by promoting and raising its awareness, especially among its ethnically diverse communities and people living in areas of high deprivation.

The primary care trial aims to find novel antiviral treatment for Covid-19 in people who are at risk of becoming seriously ill. Investigators are looking at treatments that can help people at home with early symptoms of the virus to get better quickly and prevent them from needing to go to hospital.

Vice Chancellor's remarks

Professor George E Holmes DL, President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Bolton, said he was delighted to be continuing the collaboration with the University of Oxford trials.

He said:“We continue to study the data and have realised for some time about the disproportionate effect that Covid-19 has on ethnic minority and disadvantaged communities. The health inequality is although being looked into, is stark. Indeed, we continue to promote a safe campus environment, providing space and learning opportunities for students. The University of Bolton was also one of the first institutions who led the initiative to engage with the local community to help in the acceptance of the vaccine programme and continues working with doctors and healthcare professionals in informing those who are hesitant.”

“The PANORAMIC Trial is looking at new antiviral medicines that have been approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regularity Agency, in establishing who may most benefit from the treatment.”

Professor Mahendra Patel

Professor Mahendra Patel is a former national board member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and became one of the first Fellows of NICE in 2013. In early December 2021, he was appointed Professor of Pharmacy at the University of Bolton. He was awarded an OBE in the recent New Year’s Queens Honours.

He joined the University of Oxford and its Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences in a national role as Inclusion and Diversity Lead, for the world’s largest clinical trial of its kind, the PRINCIPLE Trial, and now with the UK government’s new high priority PANORAMIC Trial looking at novel antiviral agents for the treatment of Covid-19.

Professor Patel said that as well as encouraging everyone to have the vaccines and boosters, it was crucial that an effective treatment for early symptoms of Covid-19 was developed as soon as possible to add to UK’s defence against Covid-19.

He said: “I’m delighted that Professor Holmes, the University of Bolton has continued to support the progress of our work from PRINCIPLE to now also with the PANORAMIC Trial. This is highly important work through which strong collaboration across Bolton and its diverse communities can help reach out to those that are clinically vulnerable and underrepresented communities. I’m honoured and delighted to be given a Chair of Pharmacy in the University.”

Having Student Champions going into the community and helping to spread the awareness of the trial, could further help support the trial to be more inclusive and diverse in its recruitment.

It’s great to see the amazing commitment and work of the students in supporting clinical research and Public Health through these trials. They’re all helping play a vital part in the pandemic with the University in the search for treatments that could benefit their loved ones, their communities and friends, not only in this country but potentially worldwide.

About the Trials

PANORAMIC IS A UK-WIDE CLINICAL STUDY SPONSORED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD AND FUNDED BY THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR HEALTH RESEARCH TO FIND OUT IN WHICH PEOPLE NEW ANTIVIRAL TREATMENTS FOR COVID-19 IN THE COMMUNITY CAN REDUCE THE NEED FOR HOSPITAL ADMISSION AND GET BETTER SOONER.

It is recruiting volunteers, whether they have been vaccinated or not, to join PANORAMIC through this website, participating GP practices, and other NHS sites across the UK.

PANORAMIC is open to everyone with ongoing symptoms of COVID-19 and a positive PCR or Lateral Flow test, regardless of vaccination status.

You can participate in your own home from anywhere in the UK. No face-to-face visits are required and all follow-up questions relating to symptoms would be completed online or by telephone with members of the Study Team, who would be there to support you.
