Classroom and Special Area Spotlight!
Kindergarten: Mrs. Carroll
Room # 10 has been reading and writing away! We have been putting together our phonemic awareness knowledge, phonics, and high frequency word knowledge to do both! Currently, we are doing opinion writing! In math, we are working on both 2D and 3D shapes! We are naming, comparing, building, and talking about the position of shapes in space. In social studies we are talking about how things were in the past versus how they are in the present, for example, school! We celebrated our moms and special women in our lives who care for us! We are looking forward to our field trip to Forest Park!
Grade 1: Mrs. Fritz
April was National Poetry month and we read many different poems in Room 13. We had fun celebrating May the 4th and even read a Star Wars poem! We also learned about Memorial Day and welcomed some caterpillars to our class and are excited to watch them as they grow and change. We have been reading chapter book series and learning about characters like Junie B. Jones. We started writing fiction books for the first time! We thought about and created our own characters and thought of stories to tell about them that have problems and solutions. In math we have been learning about shapes, using shapes to make new shapes, and breaking shapes into parts. We also enjoyed a fun field trip to Springfield Museum’s planetarium and the Dr. Seuss museum.
Grade 2: Miss Maier
Room 19 has been hard at work writing lab reports! Students were asked, "How can you change the speed of a vehicle?" We gathered information about a wheel and axle and friction to help us think about our guiding question. With a partner, students used their Lego kits to build a car that had a wheel and axle and made two changes to their car that would slow it down or speed it up. Students used felt and tinfoil from our imagineering cart to change the amount of friction. After testing out their vehicles, students in Room 19 wrote about what they were trying to find out, what they changed, and the results from their experiment.
Library: Mrs. Sadosky
During the first week of May the Library celebrated “Children’s Book Week” with a Story Walk in the library hallway. The book was “I Found a Kitty” by Troy Cummings.
May is “Get Caught Reading” month. A flyer went home at the beginning of the month asking students to bring in a picture of themselves reading in their favorite spot. The pictures have been coming in and it is nice to see the kids reading at home. Some of the staff have brought in pictures too! All pictures are displayed in the library.
This is the last week that classes will check out books. Overdue books and/or payments for lost or damaged books will be accepted right up until the last day of school.
It’s hard to believe that another school year is coming to an end. I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable summer!
Art: Mrs. Martin and Ms. Gallo
Art classes are now fully engaged in ideas and personal connections with particular media and themes. Kindergarteners are working to get bright colors and fill the entire paper. We are using storybooks as a way to connect tome our art. Look for truck paintings, garden collages and soon sewing on burlap. 1st graders are thinking of the interests and likes of a special person for dessert sculptures. 2nd graders will be weaving using their own color scheme and details. We welcome donations of 5.3 oz clean yogurt cups
Important Information from Previous Newsletters
The Enfield Public Schools Visual Arts Department is holding the 2nd Annual Summer Arts program this Summer. The program will run at EHS on July 10, 11, 12, 13, 17, 17, 19, and 20 from 9:00a-11:00a for all EPS students entering grades 2-12. Use the QR code in the poster to sign-up.
Afternoon Pick Up
If you are picking up your child during afternoon dismissal you must park in a designated parking space. Cars cannot be parked along the curb as it impedes any cars or emergency vehicles needing to enter the parking lot. We appreciate you adhering to our important dismissal safety procedures.
Breakfast and Lunch
FREE for All Students for the REMAINDER OF THE SCHOOL YEAR
We will provide at least a month notice to families letting you know when meals will return to Paid, Reduced, and Free meals.
Morning Drop-Off
If you are walking your child to the main entrance, you must park in a parking spot and walk your child to the door. Cars cannot be parked along the curb as it impedes those parents who are utilizing the carline to drop off their child(ren). If you are dropping your child off at the crosswalk, please have your child exit the car on the passenger’s side.
These procedures are in place to keep traffic flow moving appropriately and to maintain safety in the parking lot. Thank you in advance for following these very important safety procedures.
Monthly Assemblies
We will only be inviting parents of those classrooms to attend the assembly. The dates will be listed in our newsletter and a reminder will be sent home so that you can plan accordingly and attend the designated assembly for your child’s classroom.
Headphones
All students were provided headphones at the beginning of the year for their iPads. We do not have any headphones to replace broken ones, therefore we are encouraging families to send in a set of headphones that can be used in the classroom. Please label your child's headphones.
Attendance Letters
Per district attendance procedures, attendance letters will be sent out for all absences, excused or unexcused, following this schedule:
5th absence – 1st Letter
9th absence - 2nd Letter
10th absence – 3rd Letter
Additional letters will be sent after every 5th absence. (ex. 15th, 20th, 25th)
Regardless of the content of the letters, if the majority of absences are excused as defined in the student handbook, we will most likely not reach out unless there are a large number of absences.
If the majority of the absences are unexcused as defined in the handbook, an administrator will be reaching out to offer available support to make sure your child comes to school on a regular basis.
