ESS Gazette
3/10/2023
Dear ESS Families,
We officially kickoff our Read-a-Thon on Monday, March 13th! We are thrilled to see so many families who have activated their child's personal page and donated to our fundraiser so far. For those of you that may have missed last week's flyer, please look through your child's backpack or email their teacher for the form so that teachers can record your child's minutes read during school. Activation does not require a donation but it is appreciated. Our school goal is to raise $10,000.00, read 125,000 minutes and have 100% participation. We look forward to seeing how many minutes our students will read over the next two weeks. We hope our Read-a-Thon will help our students find joy in reading and begin a lifelong habit of reading every day!
Sincerely,
Mark Lord
Bethany Calado

Concert Update
Dear families,
Your older chorus students in grades 4-12 received an invitation to be in the Enfield Choral Festival. K-2 schools were mistakenly put on the form. K-2 schools will not be performing in this. Sorry for any confusion.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Sengupta
#SELday
We had two great reasons to celebrate at Enfield Street School this week. First, we filled our school-wide bucket! The students worked hard to earn warm fuzzies for being safe, kind, and responsible at school. All the fuzzies were put into our giant school bucket which is now overflowing!
The second reason for celebrating is that this week is international SEL day. SEL stands for social and emotional learning, which is something we work on every day at Enfield Street. We are trying to increase our students’ skills in the categories of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.
This week, all grade levels celebrated by watching the movie Inside Out during their morning SEL block. The characters in the movie are assigned colors, which correlate to an emotions management program we also teach called the Zones of Regulation. Please take a moment to ask your child what emotions belong in each of the colored zones.

Classroom and Special Area Spotlight!
Grade 1: Mrs. Fritz
Room 13 has been having fun learning and reading about different nonfiction topics as well as reading books in the Henry and Mudge series. We have been working very hard to use what we know all about to write our own nonfiction books. In math we have been making tens to add and subtract and counting groups of 10. In February we learned about important people like Ruby Bridges and Frederick Douglass during Black History Month, and we’ve started learning about Women’s History Month in March. We are really looking forward to the beginning of spring!
Grade 2: Miss Maier
Room 19 has been thinking about the point of view in different stories. One of the stories that we explored was The Three Little Pigs. We read the classic version and the big, bad wolf's side of the story. After each story, students wrote down either the wolf's or the pigs' point of view and we compared the differences. At the end of the week, students voted which point of view they believed was true. The majority of them believed the big, bad wolf wasn't actually so bad after learning his point of view.
Art: Mrs. Martin and Ms. Gallo
Kindergarten classes have created sculptures using the paper tubes so generously donated. We are now working on color mixing and brush work. Students in grade 1 are thinking about places that they wish that they could visit and places that make them feel cozy. We focused on Faith Ringgold a famous female African American fiber artist who tells stories using her art quilts. Grade 2 classes are showing artisanship with the poster contest for Save our Farms. We are impressed by the thoughtful, creative, and neat artwork. We are now printmaking and making multiples, exploring ideas of too much, not enough paint/pressure. This concept of multiples is also the theme for the art show next month. We hope to see everyone there! This year’s festival is April 21st 7-9 p.m. and April 22nd 12-3 p.m.
Students in Rm 9 are busy making their collaborative project which will be featured in this year’s art show. They are making a block based on African American artist Romare Bearden’s The Block.
Library: Mrs. Sadosky
February was a short month but it was full of so many observances! The children listened to some fun books; “Substitute Groundhog”, “Froggy’s First Kiss”, “Snowy Valentine” and “Roses are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink”! They also listened to some very meaningful books; “If You Plant a Seed”, “The Kindness Quilt”, “Kindness is Cooler Mrs. Ruler”, “Something Beautiful”, “Jabari Jumps” and “The Year We Learned to Fly”.
March is off to a fun start. I have hidden “Golden Tickets” inside some of the books in the library! There will be a prize for every ticket found.

Morning Drop-Off
If you are walking your child to the main entrance, you must park in a parking spot and walk your child to the door. Cars cannot be parked along the curb as it impedes those parents who are utilizing the carline to drop off their child(ren). If you are dropping your child off at the crosswalk, please have your child exit the car on the passenger’s side.
These procedures are in place to keep traffic flow moving appropriately and to maintain safety in the parking lot. Thank you in advance for following these very important safety procedures.
Monthly Assemblies
We will only be inviting parents of those classrooms to attend the assembly. The dates will be listed in our newsletter and a reminder will be sent home so that you can plan accordingly and attend the designated assembly for your child’s classroom.
Headphones
All students were provided headphones at the beginning of the year for their iPads. We do not have any headphones to replace broken ones, therefore we are encouraging families to send in a set of headphones that can be used in the classroom. Please label your child's headphones.
Attendance Letters
Per district attendance procedures, attendance letters will be sent out for all absences, excused or unexcused, following this schedule:
5th absence – 1st Letter
9th absence - 2nd Letter
10th absence – 3rd Letter
Additional letters will be sent after every 5th absence. (ex. 15th, 20th, 25th)
Regardless of the content of the letters, if the majority of absences are excused as defined in the student handbook, we will most likely not reach out unless there are a large number of absences.
If the majority of the absences are unexcused as defined in the handbook, an administrator will be reaching out to offer available support to make sure your child comes to school on a regular basis.
