Feb. visit to Quail Ridge
In February CCE parent Paul Havemann, and a steward of the UC Davis Natural Reserve System, provided students with an on-site herpetology study of the local amphibian and reptiles, alongside Bill Pevec. This is a pilot program and UC Davis NRS is developing an initial partnership with CCE to share the land for hands-on learning and exploration! Ultimately, the goals is to expand the program and engage as many local schools as possible.
EEP visits Local Native Garden
Patricia Carpenter started a native plant garden in the spring of 2005 along the slough bordering her property. The intention was to include only CA native plants on this 1-acre, wild escape, which now features over 400 species and cultivars. This space serves as an inspiration to the kinds of outdoor green spaces we envision for our outdoor living classrooms!

"Really, nature is in charge – so we must be flexible!" - Patricia Carpenter (former CCE garden coordinator)
EEP visit to the Waldorf Gardens
Davis Farm to School facilitates visits to the active garden programs across our Davis schools. Garden coordinators can meet in person, exchange ideas and tour the campus gardens. Davis Waldorf runs a rich garden curriculum in which every classroom receives one hour of hands on garden lessons each week.
Mason Bees at CCE
This spring our CCE gardens are host to the very docile and non stinging solitary Mason bees as part of a UC Davis research project
Book Recommendation
The Watcher by Jane Goodall
"Acclaimed picture book biographer Jeanette Winter has found her perfect subject: Jane Goodall, the great observer of chimpanzees. Follow Jane from her childhood in London watching a robin on her windowsill, to her years in the African forests of Gombe, Tanzania, invited by brilliant scientist Louis Leakey to observe chimps, to her worldwide crusade to save these primates who are now in danger of extinction, and their habitat."
