ESS Gazette
1/13/2023
Dear ESS Families,
Progress Reports were sent digitally to all families on Wednesday. Please reach out to your child's classroom teacher if you did not receive an email.
The iPad insurance extension ended on Friday, January 6th. Any uninsured iPads that are damaged will incur a $400.00 bill that will be sent home in the mail. We will work with families on payment options.
Students will be completing their winter iReady Diagnostic assessments in both reading and math over the next few weeks. All iPads will remain at school during this block of time to ensure iPads are fully charged and working properly.

Morning Drop-Off
If you are walking your child to the main entrance, you must park in a parking spot and walk your child to the door. Cars cannot be parked along the curb as it impedes those parents who are utilizing the carline to drop off their child(ren). If you are dropping your child off at the crosswalk, please have your child exit the car on the passenger’s side.
These procedures are in place to keep traffic flow moving appropriately and to maintain safety in the parking lot. Thank you in advance for following these very important safety procedures.
Classroom and Special Area Spotlight!
Kindergarten: Miss Bradway
Kindergarten scholars in room 2 are continuing to study our spoken language, and how sounds are written with letters. We are strengthening our blending skills by moving from 2-sounds to blending three sounds into a spoken word. This skill helps us as readers when we "unlock", or "sound out", a word. As writers, we are beginning to learn how to write personal narratives, or true stories about ourselves. We brainstormed ideas of things we love to help us have ready-to-go stories. As mathematicians, we have entered the world of addition! We are working on understanding and representing addition equations with manipulatives, our fingers, and pictures. We have even learned about some strategies for finding the sum, such as counting all and counting on.
Grade 1: Mrs. Lajoie
All the first graders returned to school and celebrated the new year by recalling and writing about their best memories in 2022. They also set a new goal to reach in 2023 and set a plan to make it happen. Some students wrote about academic goals such as learning harder math or reading a “Pete the Cat” book by themselves while others wanted to learn to snap, ride their scooter or bike better, or learn to ride a horse. All their great work is on display as our new bulletin board in the crossover first grade hall.
Grade 2: Mrs. Wolanin
Students in Room 15 have been working super hard on mastering addition and subtraction with two-digit numbers! We have been practicing our single digit facts at home and charting our fluency each day! Knowing our single digit facts has helped us to be more confident when we are adding and subtracting two-digit numbers. Now we are starting to work on adding and subtracting three-digit numbers!
Reading: Mrs. Jennings, Mrs. Paradise, Mrs. Woods
The winter months can be cold and long. It is a great time to encourage your child to read. You can make reading at home fun for your child. Have your child help you read a recipe to make a tasty food! Encourage your child to build a reading fort where he/she can read with a flashlight. Read some silly poems and act them out. You can also identify the rhyming words in the poem and come up with more words that match the rhymes. Make a special reading bookmark or create a special reading bookmark for a family member to encourage everyone to read. Take a nature walk outside and make note of what you see. Do some research to learn about some of the things that you saw on your walk. All of these activities require reading. It just helps to make reading fun!

Attendance Letters
Per district attendance procedures, attendance letters will be sent out for all absences, excused or unexcused, following this schedule:
5th absence – 1st Letter
9th absence - 2nd Letter
10th absence – 3rd Letter
Additional letters will be sent after every 5th absence. (ex. 15th, 20th, 25th)
Regardless of the content of the letters, if the majority of absences are excused as defined in the student handbook, we will most likely not reach out unless there are a large number of absences.
If the majority of the absences are unexcused as defined in the handbook, an administrator will be reaching out to offer available support to make sure your child comes to school on a regular basis.
