ESS Gazette
3/24/2023
Dear ESS Families,
We've extended our Read-a-Thon, due to the snow day, and Monday will be our last day to log minutes. Any minutes read over the weekend can be logged on your child's personal page and will count toward our grand total. We can't wait to see how many minutes our students read over the last 2 weeks! Monetary donations can be made until March 31st. Thank you to everyone who promoted, supported and donated to our ESS fundraiser. We truly appreciate all your efforts and hope your child had fun while building a love of reading. Stay tuned for an upcoming announcement on the number of minutes ready by our students and total donations we received for our fundraiser!
Sincerely,
Mark Lord
Bethany Calado

CREC Parent Focus Group
We’re inviting parents and guardians to participate in an Equity Focus Group. The purpose of the Focus Group is to gain information on your perspective of Enfield Public Schools and Enfield Street School as it pertains to equity. The facilitators of the Focus Group work for CREC (Capitol Region Education Council). Administration will not attend this meeting and your responses will be anonymous. Our goal is to improve the climate for Enfield Street School and the district. To help us to accurately address this goal we need to know your thoughts by responding to questions and participating in a group discussion. We hope you will be able to join the meeting. The focus group may last up to 90 minutes, can be conducted virtually or in-person, and can be conducted during the day. The date, time, and format will be determined based upon interest and availability. Please call the school to indicate your interest in participating. (860-253-6565)
Classroom and Special Area Spotlight!
Kindergarten: Miss Bradway
The scholars in room 2 have been enjoying the Spring-like weather! As scientists, we learned that we can be "weather watchers" by observing the sky conditions, precipitation, and temperature. As readers, we have been building our reading comprehension of decodable sentences and texts by increasing our fluency, thinking about who/what the sentence is about (subject), and what they/it does (predicate). In math, our friends have been learning about the benefits of counting by groups of ten...it's much more efficient than counting by ones.
Grade 1: Mrs. Lajoie
Room 7 celebrated St. Patrick’s Day! We read several fictional stories about leprechauns, generated a list of what we learned about them and then wrote a clever, persuasive letter to entice a leprechaun to visit our class. We became engineers and while working cooperatively with our peers, we brainstormed ideas, planned, and built traps using Lego bricks and our Imagineering cart materials. We left the traps out in hopes of luring a leprechaun’s visit. We were very surprised on St. Patrick’s Day to find a sneaky leprechaun had made a mess in our classroom, left us a telling note, and some shiny gold coins and a green beaded necklace as well. We enjoyed a treat of Lucky Charms after we sorted, graphed, tallied, added, and analyzed our data.
Grade 2: Mrs. Wolanin
Room 15 has been hard at work learning about measuring using standard units in math! We’ve been reading, reading, reading to rack up as many minutes as possible for our Read-a-Thon and to prepare for 3rd grade! We even read in the dark with finger flashlights and glow sticks! We’re loving learning and having fun while doing so!
Reading: Mrs. Jennings, Mrs. Paradise & Mrs. Woods
We have been celebrating National Reading Month in a variety of ways at Enfield Street School! This includes Read Across America and through activities connected to our Read-A-Thon! The children have also been listening to a variety of read-alouds! Thank you for continuing to encourage your children to read!
10 Reasons Why Reading is Important for Children!
1. It expands their vocabulary.
2. It makes them better at it.
3. It helps build independence and self-confidence.
4. It helps them make sense of the world around them.
5. It leads to their future academic success.
6. It enhances their imagination.
7. It entertains them.
8. It improves their grammar.
9. It improves their writing skills.
10. It keeps them safe. ( Reading signs and warnings allows kids to understand when something says it could harm them.)

Morning Drop-Off
If you are walking your child to the main entrance, you must park in a parking spot and walk your child to the door. Cars cannot be parked along the curb as it impedes those parents who are utilizing the carline to drop off their child(ren). If you are dropping your child off at the crosswalk, please have your child exit the car on the passenger’s side.
These procedures are in place to keep traffic flow moving appropriately and to maintain safety in the parking lot. Thank you in advance for following these very important safety procedures.
Monthly Assemblies
We will only be inviting parents of those classrooms to attend the assembly. The dates will be listed in our newsletter and a reminder will be sent home so that you can plan accordingly and attend the designated assembly for your child’s classroom.
Headphones
All students were provided headphones at the beginning of the year for their iPads. We do not have any headphones to replace broken ones, therefore we are encouraging families to send in a set of headphones that can be used in the classroom. Please label your child's headphones.
Attendance Letters
Per district attendance procedures, attendance letters will be sent out for all absences, excused or unexcused, following this schedule:
5th absence – 1st Letter
9th absence - 2nd Letter
10th absence – 3rd Letter
Additional letters will be sent after every 5th absence. (ex. 15th, 20th, 25th)
Regardless of the content of the letters, if the majority of absences are excused as defined in the student handbook, we will most likely not reach out unless there are a large number of absences.
If the majority of the absences are unexcused as defined in the handbook, an administrator will be reaching out to offer available support to make sure your child comes to school on a regular basis.
