Monthly Book Review: The Space We're In Author: Katya Balen
This emotional and inspiring story is narrated by ten-year old Frank who shares his complex family dynamics dealing with love, adversity, loss, and acceptance. Frank loves numbers, patterns, codes, soccer, and riding his bike. Max, his five-year-old brother, is autistic and non-verbal. Max eats beige foods, dislike taking baths, hates bright colors, and chooses to wear the same t-shirt daily. Anything out of Max’s norm usually results in a massive melt-down for him. The family’s life is centered around caring for Max, which leaves Frank feeling left out. His longing for attention sometimes causes Frank to resent his little brother and often wishes things could go back to the way they were before Max was born. However, a tragic loss left Frank reexamining his relationship with Max. Thus, resulting in new revelations and redefining the sibling’s brotherly relationship.
Katya Balen has worked extensively with autistic children. Her powerful storytelling shows what we perceive to be factual when it comes to people who are different, isn’t always the case. We shouldn’t judge, but instead be sensitive and considerate of those who are different, but the same.
“The Space We’re In,” is a 2021-2022 Young Hoosier Book Award nominee. It is recommended for children ages 8-12 (grades 3-7). It is a must read!
