Washington MS March '23 Update
It's a Great Day to be a Junior Husky!
From the Main Office
Hello Junior Husky Families,
I am happy to highlight our Math Department this month.
I was excited to visit classrooms and see our students engaged in some fun mathematic activities! I saw Mr. Brunson and Mr. Hamptonβs 8th grade students studying linear functions by attaching rubber bands to a weight and comparing the distances dropped based on the number of rubber bands. It was a cool way to get students moving and learning math!
Ms. Mann and Mr. Dix participated in professional development with our district math department and an EnVision math curriculum coach. They were able to partner with the coach to lesson plan with our students in mind, practice with each other, and observe an EnVision expert in action. We love getting to plan thoughtful instruction for our students. It went so well that our 6th grade team also participated in a day of planning. Shout out to Ms. Kronstad, Mr. Ahmed, and Mr. Kent for collaborating to create rigorous lessons for our students.
Mr. Crumβs empowerment kiddos experienced tremendous growth in 1st semester. We even celebrated with some ice cream! Way to go for improving test scores!
Finally, we are happy to have Ms. Lamb join our team. Ms. Lamb is joining us for the last couple of months here at Washington to serve some of our 7th and 8th grade students who have gone through a series of math teachers this year. Our students are eager to participate with Ms. Lamb. Every time I enter the classroom I see our students hard at work solving mathematical equations and connecting with Ms. Lamb.
Take care and I encourage you to ask your scholars, βHow is math going?β

π° NEWS TO KNOW
Keep Personal Electronic Devices at Home; Use School-Provided Laptop
We want to remind you personal electronic devices brought to school are at your own risk. Please note that the school is not responsible for looking for lost or stolen personal electronic devices.
We would also like to take this opportunity to remind you that our school provides each student with a personal laptop for academic use during the day. These devices are equipped with the necessary software and programs to support your child's learning. We strongly encourage our students to use the school-provided laptops and leave their personal electronic devices at home to avoid distractions and disruptions to the learning environment.
Please note that our school policy prohibits the use of personal electronic devices during instructional time, except when used for educational purposes with teacher permission. We encourage our students to follow this policy and use their school-provided laptop for their academic needs.
WITS Builds Budding Teen Writers
Special thanks to PTSA for sponsoring the Writers in the Schools (WITS) program and supporting students like the one below.
"We Are One" (Mike L., a sixth grader at WMS)
Some people on my planet call me commun itav ieo or good with people.
Some others and myself love the way people can freely come to me and speak whatβs on their mind
I love to go outside and watch the asteroids hit other planets like balls of fire, and I love to see others shine bright, they are like light in the dark.

Bring a Water Bottle
As we start moving towards Spring and hopefully warmer weather, please encourage your student to pack a reusable water bottle for school each day. If your student needs a reusable water bottle, we have some available at WMS donated by Communities in Schools. These are available through the Nurse Office or Communities in Schools site Coordinator while supplies last. Already this year, Communities in Schools have provided 150 reusable water bottles to our WMS community!

π©βπ¨βπ¦βπΆ A WORD FROM PTSA
Annual Fund Drive is Here!
It's almost April and that means we are about to kick into high gear for our Annual Fund Drive. We still have a significant gap to fill in order to be able to support our students and staff in the 2023/4 school year, especially with all the budget cuts that the district is facing.
Along with grants to each academic department, funding for every classroom teacher, food for community and school events, staff appreciation, and many other supports, the PTSA recently purchased sweatshirts for our Black Student Union through our racial equity fund and comfortable furniture for the library through our opportunity grants.
Please consider making a contribution through our website: https://wmsptsa.com/annual-fund/ or drop cash or a check off in the PTSA mailbox in the main office.
And, as always, we are looking for dedicated volunteers to be on the PTSA Board next year. Please email info@wmsptsa.com if you would like to learn more.
