ESS Gazette
3/28/2024
Dear ESS Families,
We had another incredibly successful Read-a-Thon! We surpassed all of our school reading goals as our students read a total of 171,279 minutes. They earned a special assembly with the K-9 unit. In addition we raised $9, 735.00! Absolutely amazing! We reached many of our in-school incremental goals which included an ESS brag tag, game day and silly string the principals. Thank you to all the families, friends and staff who supported our fundraiser.
Best,
Mark Lord

2024 KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
This year’s Enfield Public Schools 2024/2025 Kindergarten registration can be completed online on our website at www.enfieldschools.org. The registration link will be opening on April 1, 2024. This link will allow you to upload any required documentation to complete the process. If there are any questions, please contact your home school (Henry Barnard School, Enfield Street School, and Hazardville Memorial School), or they will contact you for any necessary clarifications or missing documentation.
Based on new Connecticut Legislation, students must now be five years old on or before September 1, 2024 to be eligible to attend kindergarten starting on August 29, 2024. Current legislation does allow an option for parents/guardians of students who will turn five between September 2nd and January 1st to request in writing if they would prefer their child to be granted a waiver to enroll in school early based on results of an assessment of the student’s academic and social skills. Parents may visit our website at www.enfieldschools.org to find a link to a form. Once the form has been completed, parents will be contacted by the school to set up an assessment date.
Students currently attending Enfield Head Start, EPS Integrated Pre-Kindergarten, and EPS Pre-K STEAM Academy are registered and do not need to re-register.
If you have any questions regarding the 2024/2025 Kindergarten Registration process, please call the Enfield Board of Education office at (860) 253-6557.
Listed below are the phone numbers for each elementary school.

Message from Nurse Tammy
Per the new CDC guidelines individuals with Covid no longer need to isolate. If your student has tested positive but is not having symptoms or symptoms have resolved they can return to school. As always they need to be 24 hours fever free without medication and 24 without vomiting or diarrhea before returning to school.
Kindergarten: Ms. Hijeck
Room 9 loves to read! We just finished up our school-wide Read-A-Thon with many fun and exciting reading activities. We enjoyed Secret Readers (parents who came to read stories to the class), Drop Everything and Read -themed days, reading BINGO, playing “Guess That Reader” and Show ‘N Share of our favorite books. One of the best activities that we continue to practice is our book clubs. Students get in groups of 3 or 4 and read a decodable book together. They practice fluency, automaticity, and comprehension by reading and engaging in conversations about the book. Students enjoy time with friends as well as enjoying the books they are now able to read!
Grade 1: Mrs. Theriault
The first graders in room 12 have been hard at work building their stamina and skills as we complete our 2nd writing unit this year: Informational Writing. Students have been using books and online research tools to aid them in choosing interesting topics and assisting them as they organize and gather facts to include in their stories. Besides using the traditional paper and pencil booklets, students learned how to use the Book Creator app through Clever to design, compose and share their stories digitally. Families, please keep an eye out for your student’s “take home” folders and on Remind for an invite to our upcoming authors celebration in a few weeks!
Grade 2: Miss Tercasio
The students in Room 17 have been busy, busy, busy learning over the past few weeks. We have spent lots of time learning about women who have impacted our lives, like the inventor of the paper bag, the inventor of the disposable diaper, astronauts, authors, animal activists, and scientists to name just a few of their specialties. During math, we have been busy measuring using inches, centimeters, feet, and yards. We are also getting to be really good at convincing others that they should agree with our opinions on topics like recess, candy, and homework.
Library: Mrs. Sadosky
During the month Golden tickets were hidden inside books throughout the library. Like Charlie, in the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, students hoped they would find “The Golden Ticket”! Students who found them received prizes.
In honor of Women’s History Month, we read “Mae Among the Stars.” Mae became the first African American Female Astronaut in 1987. On September 12, 1992, her childhood dream came true when she traveled to space on the shuttle Endeavor mission STS-47. From the time she was a little girl she always remembered what her parents told her; “If you dream it, believe in it, and work hard for it, anything is possible.” It’s a wonderful mantra I think all children should hear.
We also read “The St. Patrick’s Day Shillelagh.” Afterwards, we talked about the great potato famine in Ireland, which took place in 1845, and lead the characters in the book to leave for a better life in America. We also talked about our own heritages and items in our own families that were passed down from one generation to the next.

ETC Mental Health and Wellness Coalition
ETC will be hosting a 3-part film series, featuring the Screenagers trilogy. Screenagers: Growing up in the Digital Age is a documentary featuring Delaney Ruston, MD and her daughter as they navigate the crazy world of smarts phones, internet use and its impact on youth. Delaney documents her journey as she determines if/when she should give her daughter a smartphone.
The following 2 films (Next Chapter and Under the Influence) follow Delaney as her child grow into teens and start facing different challenges. She uncovers the connection between social media, mental health and substance misuse with the support of various experts and research. These films depict the real struggles of not only youth, but their families as they figure out how to use technology in a safe and healthy way.
Join ETC as we unpack these documentaries together and strategize how to help the youth in our lives. Panelists with both professional and lived experience will be at each screening to offer their perspective and participate in discussion. To watch the trailers, click the link below.

Medical Information
Please do not send your child in with any over-the-counter or prescribed medications. Medications need to be dropped off to the nurse with the order from the doctor. In addition, please do not send your child to school with cough drops as they cannot self-administer them.
Please make sure any health information, especially in regards to medication, is emailed directly to our school nurse.
Morning Drop-Off
If you are walking your child to the main entrance, you must park in a parking spot and walk your child to the door. Cars cannot be parked along the curb as it impedes those parents who are utilizing the carline to drop off their child(ren). If you are dropping your child off at the crosswalk, please have your child exit the car on the passenger’s side.
These procedures are in place to keep traffic flow moving appropriately and to maintain safety in the parking lot. Thank you in advance for following these very important safety procedures.
Drop-off Issues
After the 8:55 final bell, all parents must sign their child in at the office. We do not have staff outside after the bell, and it is unsafe for the students to come to the entrance by themselves. We will be calling parents who do not adhere to this rule as it is a significant safety concern.
Afternoon Pick-Up
If you are picking up your child during afternoon dismissal you must park in a designated parking space. Cars cannot be parked along the curb as it impedes any cars or emergency vehicles needing to enter the parking lot. We appreciate you adhering to our important dismissal safety procedures.
Placards
Please be aware that once someone comes to the school with a placard, we will release the matching student. Please make sure you know who has the placard to at all times.
Attendance Letters
Per district attendance procedures, attendance letters will be sent out for all absences, excused or unexcused, following this schedule:
5th absence – 1st Letter
9th absence - 2nd Letter
10th absence – 3rd Letter
Additional letters will be sent after every 5th absence. (ex. 15th, 20th, 25th)
Regardless of the content of the letters, if the majority of absences are excused as defined in the student handbook, we will most likely not reach out unless there are a large number of absences.
If the majority of the absences are unexcused as defined in the handbook, an administrator will be reaching out to offer available support to make sure your child comes to school on a regular basis.
