ESS Gazette
11/10/2022
Dear ESS Families,
We celebrated Children’s Book Week by reading the picture book This is a Whoopsie! by Andrew Cangelose. Classroom teachers took their students on a story walk throughout the ESS hallways where the pages of the book were showcased. We hope everyone enjoyed it!
Thank you to all of our military families and guardians who have served or are currently serving our country. You set a great example of service for our community and our children. We are looking forward to honoring and showing our appreciation at our Veteran's Day assembly next Friday. Due to space constraints we are limiting guests to our Veterans and one guest.

Classroom and Special Area Spotlight!
First Grade: Mrs. Fritz
November has already been a BUSY month for Room 13! We have been learning about voting and Election Day, Veteran’s Day, and Thanksgiving. In reading, we have been finding and practicing “just right” books so that we can use our reading strategies. We have also been trying to make our writing exciting for our readers by adding movement to our pictures and having the characters in our stories talk. In math, we are finding number partners for numbers up to ten.
Second Grade: Miss Maier
We are beginning our informational writing unit where students teach their reader all about a topic they know best: a sport, a hobby, and even different animals! We are thinking all about place value in math and we are using manipulatives and models to help us picture and explore numbers. In order to celebrate Veteran's Day this Friday, we read a book about Veteran's Day and students wrote what they are thankful for!
Music: Mrs. Sengupta
Students in Mrs. Sengupta (the artist formerly known as Miss Berube)’s Music class have been hard at work these first few months of school. There has been a big focus on keeping the beat, singing with a good singing voice, playing instruments respectfully, listening when you don’t know the song instead of “split second singing”, and independence for 1st and 2nd graders. We have begun echoing and reading rhythmic notation (iconic for Kindergarten and standard for 1st and 2nd grade). We have also been working on songs and performance techniques for our upcoming Veterans Day Assembly. We are so excited to sing for our guests of honor! Don’t forget to wear red, white, and blue!
Library Assistant: Mrs. Sadosky
Thank you to all who made a donation to the Birthday Book Club. You have not only put a smile on the face of your child, but on the faces of many children who will enjoy these books for years to come! Because of your generosity eighteen new books have been added to the library collection since September. If you would like your child to become a Birthday Book Club member and have misplaced the form that went home at the beginning of the year, contact me or your child’s teacher and I will gladly send one home with your child.
Art: Mrs. Martin and Ms. Gallo
Students have practiced the safe ways of working in the art room. Now we are ready to work on ideas and expand thinking by collaboration. Art students will study several artists as we begin to focus on style, idea, and texture. Here is a list of a few projects we are working on this fall:
Grade K: Magazine Collages, Tempera paintings and Torn Paper Mosaics
Grade 1: Wire sculptures, Map Making and Yarn Designs
Grade 2: Owl Bas-Relief Sculptures, Mixed Media Collage, Still-life Paintings, and Portraits
We honor and celebrate National Native American Heritage Month with our projects and the showcase of artists. We welcome any cultural connections you would like to share to enhance the art curriculum as well as donations of cardboard tubes, Better Home and Garden magazines, and egg cartons.

KITE
KITE (Key Initiatives to Early Education) is working to update Enfield’s Early Childhood Community Plan. This plan will help form the strategies and initiatives that will benefit families with young children here in town. And we need your input!
Please use the QR code to access a VERY short survey to learn what resources will best serve families as well as current challenges. If you would like to participate in a later focus group to share more of your thoughts, you can leave your contact information on the form and we will be in touch. You are your children’s first teacher and advocate, and we want to support families in these formative years.
For completing the survey, you’ll be entered into our raffle drawing to win one of multiple $25 gift cards with a choice of: Visa, Amazon, Target, or Grocery Store!
