ESS Gazette
3/15/2024
Dear ESS Families,
We had a great first week of our Read-a-Thon! We reached two of our school goals: raising $5,000.00 and reading 50,000 mintues!!! We celebrated with a whole school conga line and students have earned an extra recess next week!!! We have started each day with a read aloud read by one of our amazing staff members. It has been wonderful to see so many kids reading, too. Thank you to those of you who have activated your child's page. Please continue to reach out to family and friends for donations. Every little bit helps us get closer to reaching our goal! Please know that the funds raised directly impact the students and our school. We appreciate everyone's efforts in helping us have a successful Read-a-Thon!
Best,
Mark Lord

Message from Nurse Tammy
Per the new CDC guidelines individuals with Covid no longer need to isolate. If your student has tested positive but is not having symptoms or symptoms have resolved they can return to school. As always they need to be 24 hours fever free without medication and 24 without vomiting or diarrhea before returning to school.
Kindergarten: Mrs. Cremona
The Kindergarten students of room 2 are studying the weather. We are learning about the four seasons. This week we learned all about rainbows and how they are made with sunlight and rain. We made our own rainbows with markers, coffee filters and a spray bottle. When we sprayed water onto our rainbows and the colors spread like the colors in a tie dye shirt!
Grade 1: Mrs. Lajoie
In Room 7 we have been using the Second Step program to learn how to identify our own feelings and those of others around us. By paying attention to people’s faces and bodies, we can understand how others are feeling and show kindness, concern, empathy, and compassion. Over the course of the past few months in social studies, we have also read several books about trailblazers, history makers, and barrier breakers who changed the world. Recently we have read a book entitled, “We Are All Wonders” written by R.J. Palacio which is a true story about a boy who does ordinary things, feels ordinary but looks extraordinary and how those around him treat him. It is full of positive messages about respecting differences, being kind and showing empathy and compassion towards others. We have learned the importance of treating others with kindness and respect and, as a culminating activity, room 7 has been practicing a song with sign language that we are eager to share with our families when we perform during the March Spirit Assembly.
Grade 2: Mrs. Wolanin
Students in Room 15 have completed their math unit on adding and subtracting three-digit numbers using different strategies and their knowledge of place value. After completing the informational writing unit, students have been delving deeper into sentence structure while editing sentences using proper spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. We are beginning our science unit on plants, animal adaptations and habitats. They are excited about more science experiments and hands-on learning!
Reading: Mrs. Jennings & Mrs. Schmidt
It has been great to hear the students talking about all of the minutes that they are reading and recording for our Read-A-Thon. In order to help keep our students motivated to read, we have some fun things planned during the school day. Each morning the students will watch a video of one of our staff members reading a book. They will be voting on their favorite books throughout the two weeks of the Read-A-Thon. Students will also be viewing book titles made out of emojis and try to guess the title.
It is great to see the students so excited to add to their reading minutes. Please continue to encourage your child to keep recording their reading minutes and keep the schoolwide momentum going!

ETC Mental Health and Wellness Coalition
ETC will be hosting a 3-part film series, featuring the Screenagers trilogy. Screenagers: Growing up in the Digital Age is a documentary featuring Delaney Ruston, MD and her daughter as they navigate the crazy world of smarts phones, internet use and its impact on youth. Delaney documents her journey as she determines if/when she should give her daughter a smartphone.
The following 2 films (Next Chapter and Under the Influence) follow Delaney as her child grow into teens and start facing different challenges. She uncovers the connection between social media, mental health and substance misuse with the support of various experts and research. These films depict the real struggles of not only youth, but their families as they figure out how to use technology in a safe and healthy way.
Join ETC as we unpack these documentaries together and strategize how to help the youth in our lives. Panelists with both professional and lived experience will be at each screening to offer their perspective and participate in discussion. To watch the trailers, click the link below.

Medical Information
Please do not send your child in with any over-the-counter or prescribed medications. Medications need to be dropped off to the nurse with the order from the doctor. In addition, please do not send your child to school with cough drops as they cannot self-administer them.
Please make sure any health information, especially in regards to medication, is emailed directly to our school nurse.
Morning Drop-Off
If you are walking your child to the main entrance, you must park in a parking spot and walk your child to the door. Cars cannot be parked along the curb as it impedes those parents who are utilizing the carline to drop off their child(ren). If you are dropping your child off at the crosswalk, please have your child exit the car on the passenger’s side.
These procedures are in place to keep traffic flow moving appropriately and to maintain safety in the parking lot. Thank you in advance for following these very important safety procedures.
Drop-off Issues
After the 8:55 final bell, all parents must sign their child in at the office. We do not have staff outside after the bell, and it is unsafe for the students to come to the entrance by themselves. We will be calling parents who do not adhere to this rule as it is a significant safety concern.
Afternoon Pick-Up
If you are picking up your child during afternoon dismissal you must park in a designated parking space. Cars cannot be parked along the curb as it impedes any cars or emergency vehicles needing to enter the parking lot. We appreciate you adhering to our important dismissal safety procedures.
Placards
Please be aware that once someone comes to the school with a placard, we will release the matching student. Please make sure you know who has the placard to at all times.
Attendance Letters
Per district attendance procedures, attendance letters will be sent out for all absences, excused or unexcused, following this schedule:
5th absence – 1st Letter
9th absence - 2nd Letter
10th absence – 3rd Letter
Additional letters will be sent after every 5th absence. (ex. 15th, 20th, 25th)
Regardless of the content of the letters, if the majority of absences are excused as defined in the student handbook, we will most likely not reach out unless there are a large number of absences.
If the majority of the absences are unexcused as defined in the handbook, an administrator will be reaching out to offer available support to make sure your child comes to school on a regular basis.
