What a month September has been a new Prime Minister, the sad passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and we have a King oncemoreinKingCharlesIII.

Many of our members, myself included, took on the challenge of waiting in line for hours to pay our respects to The Queen and a worthwhileexperienceweallfoundit.

With the passing of The Queen we have entered into a new age we are no longer Elizabethans but Caroleans Our outlook should remain to Adopt, Adapt and Improve in the new Age, as much as weandourpredecessorshavedoneinthepast.

Here are some statistics about our great Association to put it into perspective:

RTBIcurrentlyhas2,750members.

Thesearespreadamongst321clubs.

124membersjoinedthisyearand40left.

Theaverageageis>36yearsold.

714areover42.

I can't give you the average age of 41ers because we don't have that information, but I can tell you that we presently have 12,907 members in 682 clubs. Well almost because this members figure is based upon the number of members in each club (or the declared ones anyway) so if someone is a member of 5 clubs, he will be included 5 times in that figure. To eliminate this overcounting we should deduct say 350 from the total so that wouldbringusdownto12,557members(solet'ssay,12,500).

To better serve that declining membership we need to carry on Adopting and Adapting and Improving to serve our membership andourmovementproperly.

Keepsafe.

NATIONAL

Upon the death of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II, I issued the following statement via Facebook:-

I am sure we have all been impacted hard upon hearing the news that Her Majesty has passed away.

Having reigned since 6th February 1952, she has served the Country selflessly for just over 70 years

For many, she is the only monarch we have known.

41 Club will be following the appropriate mourning protocol and I will be sending a message to the Palace on behalf of the Association.

I am sure that the whole of 41 Club will join me in passing on my condolences to the Royal Family.

Unsurprisingly, July was hectic.

An evening with the London Old Tablers Society in the Army and Navy Club was followed by a mad dash up the M1 to Leicester for a lunchtime food tasting for my President’s Ball at the Athena. My PLC Chairman, Richard Holland likes to think of himself as a foodie, regularly attending Michelin Star Restaurants and taking pictures of the food he finds amazing If you haven’t booked in, here is a picture of Richard taking a picture of the food, a ringing endorsement indeed.

The Fellowship of this club is second to none, so I was delighted to accept an invitation to Showtime 41 Club, a Club which consists of the organising committee of the Eastbourne Conference Team along with the two President’s Martin Green and Karen Durie. Hosted by the amazing Richard Dyson who arranged Chinese chefs to produce a Chinese Banquet. An amazing day made even more special, because it was my first 41 Club Conference. Being presented with a block of feta cheese (cheese of the devil) did however earn him a telling off!

On a rare Saturday off, I managed to get down to Brentford to witness the mighty Bees crush the mighty Manchester United 4 0. I have been supporting Brentford since 1968 and I never thought I would see this day happen Apologies to Red Devil Fans… Pontus Jannson the Brentford Captain agreed.

PRESIDENT JIM CONWAY

The following week was spent in Scotland a fantastic long weekend arranged by 41er extraordinaire Kevin Stewart Visiting Edinburgh, Dunfermline, Callandar and the Scottish Regional Golf Day. Supporting Kilsh and Sue as they did an open water swim in Loch Tay for Heather Parry’s charity, Re Engage. Sightseeing Harry Potter’s Bridge and the James Bond Skyfall Road and finishing off with a visit to the Edinburgh Tattoo, quite simply breathtaking.

The next day, along with Steve James we visited RAF Marham with North Walsham 41 Club. An amazing day seeing F35’s take off and standing next to an atomic bomb One of the many one offs that you experience with 41 Club and many thanks from Kelly for the invite and organising such a great day.

Then it was the long drive down to Norwich. I met up with Des Fulcher and Dominic Price for lunch and then a special unveiling of a photo of Louis Marchesi at what is now Cinema City and what was the site of the first Round Table meeting in 1927 It was an honour to do the unveiling with Niels Marchesi, the grandson of Louis.

Ash & Emily Gardner who walked from Marchesi House to the Ukrainian Embassy raising thousands for The Ukrainian Apoeal couldn’t attend as our guests at conference in Cardiff, so I arranged the next best thing and that was hosting them in Moneypenny’s, my private James Bond Bar and our gin bar, ‘The Legless Arms,’ as a thank you for what they achieved.

The month ended with a great night out with Region 11 and 12 enjoying a cluster evening organised by Rory Tompsett and Steve Tasker. The Brew House in Chester was the venue and a brewery tour followed by a beer and burger night was fantastic. It certainly is the way forward, so please contact your Regional Rep, who would be more than happy to set one up for you

Jim's Latest Challenge and an Appeal for Assistance from Scottish 41ers!

As the blistering heat of summer gives way to the cooler climes of the autumn, I am very much looking forward to the Round Table Family Scottish Football Stadium Challenge that is starting on 11th October at Ross County and finishing at Annan Athletic around 36 hours later. How can you help?

Joining me on this quest are the President’s of Round Table, Ladies Circle and Tangent. Is there anybody that can home host one or all of us on the evening of 10th October near Ross County FC where we are starting the challenge?

Is there anybody that can home host one or all of us near to Annan Athletic FC where we are finishing exhausted at the end of the challenge around 36 hours later?

Can you encourage your Table, Circles and Tangents to meet us at the grounds as we complete this marathon visit and turn up with media to promote the four clubs and/or donations for our charities.

If you want to be part of the World record bid, then why not drive a leg or two or three and join the World Record Beating Team.

Please either phone me on 07708 949339 or e mail me at President@41club.org if you can help or need more information.

Our

Mark House, is stepping down and Applications are invited

Mark has done an exemplary job as Honorary Webmaster. Going forward National Council is looking to appoint instead an Honorary I.T. Officer who would be an IT Professional who would administer the Association's whole IT infrastructure, on a voluntary (i.e. unpaid!) basis. The job description should be agreed in the near future but we are inviting expressions of interest now. Anyone interested please contact me, Don Mullane, at comms@41Club.org and I will explain the role in more detail.

A Report on the

Honorary Webmaster,
Coming in Next Month's Newsletter
2022 Club Cruise

Applications are invited for the role of Honorary Solicitor for the Association

Our Honorary Solicitor, David Smith, has announced his intention to retire from this position with effect from the 2023 Annual General Meeting in Jersey, after five years of service to National Council. We are grateful for the advice and assistance that David has given to National Board and Council in this period, and we are now seeking to replace him.

We are inviting applications from suitably qualified 41 Club members to take over this position as from the 2023 AGM.

What the role involves

1.

Advice to National Board and Council on the interpretation of Constitution, Rules and Standing Orders.

2. 3. 4. 5. What we are looking for

Assistance with drafting changes to rules in the form of resolutions for the Annual General Meeting.

Advice and support to National Board in situations giving rise to actual or potential litigation.

Advice on contracts entered into by the Association with outside parties.

Any other legal or constitutional advice as requested by National Council, individual Councillors and Clubs in furtherance of their activities.

The Board invite applications from members of 41 Club who have legal qualifications and experience of the legal profession. Previous experience of National Council would be an advantage, as the post holder would be expected to have a sound understanding of 41 Club constitution, rules and standing orders.

The Honorary Solicitor would be a non voting member of National Council and expected to attend National Council meetings. Weekend allowance and travel expenses can be claimed.

So, you think you fit the bill?

Send a message to Bernard Elwen, National Secretary secretary@41club.org setting out your legal qualifications and experience, your Round Table and 41 Club career, and why you think you would be an asset to National Council. Please submit by 30th November 2022.

For more information, contact David Smith, whose contact details are on the 41Club website here: https://41club.org/pages/solicitor-contact

Larbert & Falkirk 41 - My Name'5 Doddie

incredible £69,466.

The charity My Name’5 Doddie Foundation was set up by former Scotland rugby player Doddie Weir and a group of trustees in 2017 shortly after he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. Doddie has been driven to help fellow sufferers and seek ways to further research into this, as yet, incurable disease MND is a disease which affects the motor neurons of the nervous system. It is life shortening and mostly progresses rapidly. The charity’s vision is “a world free from MND.” The number 5 is a special number for the Foundation, featuring in it’s name and is a reference to Doddie’s playing number for his clubs, Melrose and Newcastle Falcons, and the jersey he wore when he earned his 61 caps for Scotland.

Larbert & Falkirk 41 Club held a successful fundraiser at the Dobbie Hall in Larbert in May with 240 people attending. Entertainment was provided by the Abba tribute group Voyage and magician Elliot Bibby. Chairman for the 2021/2022 session Mark Northway said ’We would like to thank everyone who has supported us to put on this event. It was great to see so many people enjoying themselves while raising money for a worthy cause and one that has touched my own family. The members of the Club were astounded by the final amount raised, much more than we had anticipated ”

Norwich News

Alpha Knights 41 Club

This story began, writes Des Fulcher, when I discovered that some plans to redevelop part of the very building where the first official meeting of Round Table was held, which included two separate rooms upstairs being named in honour of key historic figures relative to the building Firstly the Colman Sisters who funded a lot of the early years of the building which included Suckling Hall, then secondly Louis Marchesi

Part of the redvelopment plans included a fundraising appeal for shortfall of monies for the project, which I personally made a great deal of effort to engage 41 Club with and Richard King of Norwich RT1 led the way with Tablers in the UK and some International groups too Whilst the loft of this historic building was being cleared an original signed photo of Louis Marchesi was discovered, the venue suggested it could be auctioned to help raise funds, though I conjured up a better plan to create 50 high quality limited edition prints to ensure the original could remain in the building.

Designers of the new Marchesi Room interior restricted anything being fixed to the walls, the only compromise made was to afford the bespoke cabinet on the stairs with a plaque to acknowledge clubs or individuals who donated £250 or more to the project, leaving the original signed photo without placement.

Despite more dialogue with the venue and Norwich City Council (who own the building) things ground to a halt, then the pandemic emerged which gave further cause for concern to discover where the photo was and what could happen if Cinema City doesn't continue operating there.

A few weeks back I popped in to tidy up the Round Table Family display cabinet, as luck would have it I met the new Manager Justin Holmes who was eager to re engage with our organisation the immediate response was to see if the original photo could be put in the Marchesi Room, which as we now know has finally happened!

Some of the people I would like to mention/thank in this story are: Cinema City Manager Justin Holmes, 41 Club National President Jim Conway, former Lord Mayor of Norwich David Fullman and everyone who supported the Marchesi Room Project

Round Table Family organisation clubs worldwide are welcome to ask for an informal tour of the key areas in Norwich relative to Round Table being founded, and as ever encouraged to consider sending smaller items of memorabilia to consider adding into the Round Table Family display cabinet.

The National Motorcycle Museum

celebrated the 50th anniversary of 41er

Norman Hyde's Record Breaking

Triumph Sidecar Land Speed Record

On Saturday 24th September, the National motorcycle Museum celebrated the 50th anniversay of Norman Hyde's land speed record on his Triumph Roadrunner III outfit Hyde captured the World Sidecar Land Speed Record in 1972, driving his home built Roadrunner III to an average speed of 161.8 mph at RAF Fairford a record that remained unbeaten for over 35 years. Norman worked as a development engineer at Triumph's Meriden factory at the time and used his experience to uprate the Triumph Trident engine that powered his outfit, enlarging it to 831cc and adding a supercharger Roadrunner III was added to the National Motorcycle Museum's collection in the 1980s, but was one of the hundreds of machines that was severely damaged when fire tore through the building in September 2003 Fortunately the bodywork, handmade in aluminium by Don Woodward, was in storage at the time and survived The bike itself was painstakingly restored by Don's brother, John, and Roadrunner III is now on permanent display in the Museum.

Norman's anniversary coincides with Triumph's 120th jubilee celebrations and he was at the Museum 50 years to the day the he broke the record using their engine. The Triumph Owners' Motor Cycle Club organised a ride in, with a concours competition for their bikes judged by Norman. He gave a talk about his death defying high speed ride on three wheels, followed by a question and answer session He will signed original Triumph postcards, made to commemorate the achievement, to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK.

Steve James, National Vice President

At the beginning of September, I deputised for President Jim at the World Half Year meeting in Odense, Denmark It was pleasing to see National Councillors Colin and Jason in attendance as well as IRO Andy and Comms Officer Don. For the first time at a world meeting 5 workshops were held on the Friday whereby I attended “Leadership in 41 club” and “Running successful world meetings”, whilst the GB&I rep attended the other workshops. I also held individual meetings with the Tangent International President and Secretary and also the Agora Vice President to discuss arrangements for our hosting of the World meeting in Stratford in May 2023 It was pleasing to receive recognition on the Saturday for the work I have been undertaking in drafting an International conference manual which was presented to the International President and VP a couple of weeks prior to attending the HYM. The Half year meeting was very productive with a number of resolutions on changing the rules being voted on, which will be tabled at the World meeting next year.

At the end of the month Karen and I attended the 41 Club caravan and camping rally which was attended by 71 41 Club and Tangent members The event was excellently organised by Richard and Anne Dyson with assistance from Ringwood 41 Club and Tangent members who provided the special entertainment in the pool on Saturday which was truly remarkable. It was great to catch up with regular rally goers and also meet some newbies. I would certainly recommend members attending any of our National Fellowship events because the fun and fellowship are second to none to members.

In relation to the World meeting that we are hosting, the programme has been finalised and it is all “systems go” as bookings start coming in. I would certainly recommend attending an International event and anyone who wishes to know more about Stratford details can be found at www.world-meeting.net
