Publisher's summary

Through swirling dawn fog, they follow the trail of discarded items at their feet: a tube of glittery lip gloss; a cell phone; a cracked makeup compact, broken chunks of ivory powder spilling into the grass. Then the mist partsjust for a secondto reveal a beautiful young girl on the ground, her pale lips frozen forever in a silent scream....

On a winding mountain road into the small town of Denton, Pennsylvania, Detective Josie Quinn finds the body of a local teenage girl, Dina Hale. The sight of plum-colored bruises gathering around the girl’s neck pierces Josie’s heart, but the discovery of a second girl’s empty purse in the dirt nearby gives her a flicker of hope that one person, at least, made a lucky escape.

Dina’s parents are grief-stricken as the town rallies together in a desperate search for the second girl, Alison Mills, who waitressed with Dina at a local hotel. The two best friends were on their way to a shift when they were attacked. Josie was too late to save Dina, but she won’t rest until Alison is home safe.

Hitting a dead-end with interviews, Josie thinks she’s on to something when a photo surfaces suggesting Alison was romantically involved with one of the hotel staff. But when Josie arrives at the man’s house to find a bullet in his head and the house ransacked, the case comes crashing down.

Evidence of frantic searching at both crime scenes has Josie convinced a twisted killer is on a hunt for something very personal and precious. And that they won’t stop until they find it. But how many innocent lives will be destroyed before Josie can uncover the missing piece at the heart of this deadly puzzle? And what sacrifices will she have to make to find Alison alive?

Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Robert Dugoni, and Rachel Caine.

Could have been 5 stars

I wanted to scream when they come in and there is a woman bleeding on the floor and two suspects in the basement. You should barricade the suspects in and treat the woman until help arrives, although that seemed to take forever. No, they leave the lady bleeding on the floor and go down a dark basement putting themselves and the woman at risk. That made no sense. I liked the story but hate when the writer has them do something stupid to create drama. Also cops are trained never to give up their off-season weapons. I believe he(or she) that shoots first wins.

Local Girl Missing

Plot. The Detective Josie Quinn series consists of several police procedurals, most involving missing or murdered women or girls. The setting is a small town in Pennsylvania. Josie's childhood trauma is interwoven into each story; we watch her character struggle with her job, love life, and the brain-twisting murders traversing the series.

Liked, Characters. Stories are initially straightforward who-done-it murders that morph into complex mysteries to enjoy. Josie's circle of friends consists of her fellow cops, the medical examiner, and her boss, each with a unique personality. Her family is initially small, but you'll see it expand as the stories progress. Not too many characters to keep track of - as they are integrated into each story. You'll have fun getting to know the characters and puzzling solutions. You'll find yourself muttering, "Wait ... what?" near the end of most books as the plots twist and surprises abound.

Not so hot. The first three books were poorly narrated by Eilidh Beaton as diction and child-like pronunciation were annoying. But stick with it as the rest are well read by Kate Handford. Production is fine, bumped speed to 1.4 - a preference, not a criticism.

The series is written by Lisa Regan and released from early 2018 through today. Bookouture published initially, later picked up by Hachette.

Recommended murder mysteries.

Lots of twists and turns

When Josie and Noah come upon a murder in progress…the case is just beginning…the friend of the murdered girl is missing. The suspect is running scared, but not from the law. The small PA town of Denton has become the focus of the mob! Told mostly from Josie’s POV but also includes snippets of a mystery person’s POV. Lots of action and very entertaining.

Great book

This book’s story line
was great, but her character development was excellent.
I found my self screaming, “ come on don’t be so dumb.”
And “ Hurry up already.”
The characters came alive which gave the story its legs.. Highly recommend this book.
