Abstract
The collection consists of correspondence related to United States Ambassador to Cambodia Philip Dodson Sprouse, including letters from former secretary of state Dean Acheson and general George C. Marshall.
Biographical / Historical
Philip Dodson Sprouse was born in 1906 in Tennessee. He graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1928. Sprouse became a Foreign Service officer in 1938 and served in China. In the 1940s he served as an advisor on China to the Harry Truman presidential administration, traveling to China on diplomatic missions with General George C. Marshall and General Albert C. Wedemeyer. In 1959 he was appointed a Foreign Service Inspector and later served as the United States Ambassador to Cambodia from 1962 to 1964. Sprouse retired in 1964 and died in San Francisco, California in 1977.
