We have disappointing news. In an unexpected turn, the bill is now “dead” for this session. The chair of the Senate Business, Professions & Economic Development Committee made it known that he would change the bill in ways that would make its enforcement ineffective at protecting cats from cruel, crippling declawing.

Upon careful reflection, and with the knowledge that bad legislation is worse than no legislation at all, we have worked with The Paw Project to withdraw the bill from consideration in this legislative session.

We are not giving up, though! We will continue working with legislators and allies in California to push for an effective bill to protect cats from declawing. We will bring this critical lifesaving, measure back to the legislature as soon as possible.

Thank you to all in California who spoke out with us to Keep Cats’ Claws on Their Paws. We will keep up the fight until we win for the cats!
