Dredging bay to ease crude shipments raises concerns

While COVID-19 has us in social isolation, we elder women know that our interdependence has never been clearer. For health in our communities and for a livable future, we should be ending fossil fuel operations.

We at 1000 Grandmothers for Future Generations strongly oppose the Army Corps of Engineers’ plans to dredge 13 miles of the Bay to ease transport of toxic crude to Bay Area refineries like Phillips 66 in Rodeo.

This taxpayer-financed project threatens to increase toxic pollution as well as the risk of catastrophic tanker spills and oil fires that could endanger the ecological and economic lives of cities around the Bay Area.

Communities near refineries already suffer increased rates of cancer, heart disease, asthma and low birth weights related to proximity to these refineries.

In these times, we must recognize that we are only as healthy as our most vulnerable communities. Send comments to SFBaytoStockton@usace. army.mil. Let them know you oppose the dredging plan. — Carol Rothman, 1000 Grandmothers for Future Generations, Berkeley
