The American Deep State Conspiracy

The American Deep State is an extremely controversial topic in the United States. The existence of a Deep State is intertwined with other conspiracies such as the assassination of JFK and 9/11. One's beliefs around the American Deep State are often associated with their political views, which causes even more division in the world of politics in the United States. I wrote an essay on this topic to outline the basic principles of this conspiracy and to show evidence of what solution is most probable.

The American Deep State (Projects 1-4)

Introduction

As Americans, we can trust our government—or can we? Regardless of political opinions, Americans can agree that the country and its government policies have drastically changed over the last 100 years. Research on these changes have led many people to the idea of a "Deep State" (Ehrenreich 1). A Deep State existing in the United States would mean that powerful people from the government, military, or corporations are using their power or money to secretly manipulate the decisions made and the information that is released by the government (Scott “Peter Dale Scott” 1). Talk around this second form of government existing causes large divides in political parties because supporters of one party tend to believe that the "Deep State" benefits the agenda of the opposing group but hinders their own (Illing 1). One believer of Deep State, Peter Dale Scott, wrote "The American Deep State" to prove that there are factors outside of the government and hidden from the public that are influencing the country's policies (Scott “The American Deep State” 1). There are generally two sides to this conspiracy:

1. There is no "Deep State," rather people use the term to have someone to blame for government policies they dislike or to cause more division between political parties.

2. There really is a hidden "Deep State" of powerful people who secretly manipulate national policy.

Let's dive into the theories of the American Deep State, and the likely possibility that ____________.

Character Analysis

Peter Dale Scott is the perfect example of someone who is “old and wise.” He lives with great eagerness and persistence that define his personality and allow him to continually expand his knowledge. In his adult years, Scott became interested in theories about secrecy in the United States government (Scott “Peter Dale Scott” 1). The American Deep State is a conspiracy about a secret form of government in the United States controlling the country and its leaders. Scott’s drive led him to research and draw conclusions about many conspiracy theories, his most famous research being about the American Deep State. His curiosity to discover truth amongst the unknown and his determination to make his findings publicized have brought his theories much attention.

Scott’s curiosity pushes him to explore new areas and contributed to the immense amount of research he has conducted. Before investigating the American Deep State, Scott was a Canadian poet, showing that he has a creative mind to write pieces that are not researched based. Although he is a master of creative writing, Scott is also extremely curious about facts and research. He gets himself involved in ideas that are controversial and confusing, simply because he is intrigued by finding the truth. Scott does not limit his mind; he wants to educate himself from all angles on the topics he studies. “Scott has a charming way of moving through both sides of any argument,” says American Poetry Review critic Alan Williamson (“Peter Dale Scott” 1). Scott’s curiosity to understand all points of view is evident to anyone who reads his work.

Determination also contributed to Scott’s success as a writer. He writes with a fierceness to get truth to his readers, even if it comes across forceful. “One of America’s most trenchant political researchers,” says a Publishers Weekly contributor (“Peter Dale Scott” 1). The tone of his writing proves his determination to find answers and share these findings with the world. Scott challenges the “truth” that the rest of the world usually accepts. He is a trailblazer in the world of conspiracy theories.

Because of a strong will, Scott can be fearless and honest in his research and writing. He pairs his creative mind of a poet with factual research to write about high-level topics in a way that is captivating for readers. Without his strong curiosity and determination, writing about the American Deep State would have been an extremely difficult task. Scott didn’t mind getting himself tangled in controversial ideas. Few would feel comfortable with publicly questioning the United States’ government, but Scott prioritizes sharing facts over how it may make himself or others feel.

Explanation of Conspiracies

There are many suspicions about a Deep State in America, and several conspiracies to support these suspicions. Deep State refers to a second form of control that manipulates the true government of a country. One conspiracy about this idea is that a Deep State does not exist, but the idea is used to have somewhere to place blame for government decisions a person does not agree with. Another conspiracy, which shows doubt in the United States’ leaders, is that there are powerful people using their resources to manipulate the United States government and keeping it hidden from the public (Michaels 1). These opposing opinions are extreme, but there is rarely any middle ground in this debate. In this essay, both sides of the argument will be explained, as well as what is most likely the truth behind the American Deep State.

The first theory proposes there is no Deep State in America, but that the concept was created to explain suspicious activity in the government and used as a way for individuals to place blame on political parties that oppose their own. People who argue a Deep State exists say there must be a second form of control to explain national security leaks and other suspicious activity in the government (Scott 1). This argument has many holes because every individual will have differing opinions on what is suspicious and what is right for the government to do. The Deep State is difficult to be proven real for many reasons, one being that American citizens cannot even agree on what it is. Ideas on what the American Deep State is changes depending on political beliefs. For example, in an article by David Rohde, when talking about an Executive Order from Donald Trump, he says “Democrats have decried the order as a return to Civil-War-era cronyism. Some conservatives, however, have praised it as a brave attempt to tame the ‘deep state,’” showing how the term “Deep State” is used in opinionated political arguments (Rohde 1). Such opinionated positions lead to biased research and sources, making the American Deep State a confusing topic to find information on and a difficult theory to prove. Because of the varying viewpoints, it is logical to say that the existence of an American Deep State is simply a theoretical idea in politics that changes according to opinion and is not yet proven as fact.

The second belief about the American Deep State is that powerful individuals in the United States government, military, or corporations use their power and money to manipulate the decisions made and information released by the United States government (Michaels 1). The largest argument against a Deep State comes from American citizens who want to have a sense of trust in their government. While it would be comforting to trust your own government, there is plenty of evidence to conclude that there is secrecy in the system (1). The existence of an American Deep State explains America’s increased militarization and interest in war, income disparity, and restrictions on constitutional rights (Scott 1). Violent events in the United States such as 9/11 and the assassination of JFK have proven to be explained falsely on public news and government documents, causing suspicion to arise in anyone who takes the time to research these events (1). These mysterious law-breaking and terroristic acts can be referred to as deep events (1). When these deep events occur, they cause changes in the United States’ government and law enforcement. Author Peter Dale Scott says that “a significant role in this historic reversal was the intervention of a series of structural deep events,” which supports the idea that these incidents were not mere accident but planned strategically by people in high positions in the United States (1). This proves that, in one way or another, the government has connections to the acts that have shocked and harmed American citizens. It is also important to know that these deep events have overlapping details, such as the people involved and the changes they prompted in government policies (1). Information about the related details between deep events and the United States government can be read in Peter Dale Scott’s book, “The American Deep State: Wall Street, Big Oil, and the Attack on U.S. Democracy.”

With social media being so prevalent today, it is easier than ever for anyone to release and access information. Because of this, social media is not always a reliable source of information—every individual can post whatever they want and label it as fact. Every move a person makes on social media platforms is tracked by data companies and can be used to alter the information an individual sees on their apps (The Great Hack). These data companies are not shy to talk about the information they collect, “Cambridge Analytica claimed to have 5,000 data points on every American voter—but it was invisible,” statistics on American citizens are heavily used during elections (1). Data companies such as Cambridge Analytica collect data through online activity and attempt to use it as a tactic to sway people’s opinions (1). They do this by pushing personalized ads, campaigns, and opinions to people on social media based on what that person has been interacting with on their apps (1). This type of data manipulation is especially apparent in politics and was even called “The Data That Turned the World Upside Down” when Donald Trump was put into office in 2017 because of the impact social media was believed to have on the election (1). This is just one example of an outside factor manipulating government elections and actions. Like Cambridge Analytica, other large corporations use their resources to meddle in the government, creating a deep state in the United States.

With the amount of evidence that points to secrecy in the United States Government, it is most plausible to conclude that there are hidden factors influencing government officials and policies. A Deep State exists in the United States, but it may look different than what many think. The Deep State is not a group of individuals who work together and plot their next steps. It is rather many different powers who are separately using resources to sway the government in a way that is beneficial to themselves. Dominant people in the military may use their close relations to the government to persuade military-related decisions, while successful social media companies may use their data to sway opinions of the public to change the direction of popular political ideas and voting trends (Scott 1; The Great Hack). The government we see is not the only thing controlling the United States.

Conclusion

The American Deep State is a controversial topic, and this controversy is magnified because of the extreme disagreement between political parties in the world today. It is not common knowledge to be informed about Deep State and it is not an idea that is talked about in schools. This leaves people to research for themselves, which can lead to biased opinions or using biased resources. To truly understand the truth of the American Deep State, it is important to learn about all angles and go into the research with an open mind. With thorough research, the evidence of an American Deep State that was supposed to be hidden from the public, becomes visible.

Citizens of the United States have reasonable cause not to trust the American government. Despite differences in political opinions, all Americans can agree that the country and its government policies have had major changes over the last century (Scott “The American Deep State…” 1). Extensive research on these changes in the government has led many individuals to the conclusion of an American Deep State (Ehrenreich 1). Saying that a deep state exists in the United States is to say that powerful people in the United States government, military, or successful corporations use their wealth and position of power to manipulate the government in secret (Scott “Peter Dale Scott” 1). The idea that an American Deep State exists and theories of what it would truly look like creates division among political parties (Rohde 1). This is because individuals of one political party believe that the Deep State benefits the agenda of the opposing party but hinders their own (Illing 1). Author Peter Dale Scott wrote “The American Deep State” to prove that the Deep State is real within the United States and to uncover the outside factors that are influencing government power (Scott “The American Deep State…” 1). There are generally two views about this conspiracy:

  1. An American Deep State does not exist, but the term is used to have a place to blame for government actions that an individual does not agree with. The idea of a Deep State is simply a theory used to argue and discredit opposing political parties to an individual’s own beliefs.

  2. An American Deep State exists and is made up of powerful people who have an agenda to manipulate the actions of the United States government in secret.

The truth likely lies somewhere in between these two extreme ideas. There is enough proof to support the idea of a Deep State, but the powers of this controlling force are likely not connected to each other, each using their own power to their own benefits. It is likely that some form of a Deep State is real in the United States.
