Meet Alan Steven, this week's #ACSSustainabilityStar! As a process chemist, Alan is dedicated to improving pharmaceutical manufacturing processes to minimize environmental impact. Through STEM sessions and 'Pint of Science' events, he spreads awareness of #GreenChemistry principles. Alan leads sustainability projects, including lifecycle assessments and green chemistry articles, through the ACS GCI Pharmaceutical Roundtable. He champions metrics like predictive process mass intensity (PMI) and iGAL innovation scorecarding for process improvement. Alan advocates reducing single-use plastic consumption and highlights the role of nanomaterials in sustainable product separation. Let's applaud Alan's commitment to a greener future through innovation and education! https://brnw.ch/21wIXcg

As we consider sustainability and the potential of green chemistry, it's essential to put time and energy into understanding not just our own needs, but the needs of diverse communities worldwide. In our recent Q&A with Dr. Thompson Izuagie, he told us about challenges specific to Africa, from lack of laboratory equipment to getting global speakers to attend local conferences. We interviewed Dr. Thompson in the context of the upcoming first-ever American Chemical Society Africa Regional Conference on Green and Sustainable Chemistry, which will take place May 5-9, 2024 in Lagos, Nigeria. Dr. Thompson provided his perspective as the Secretary of the Main Organizing Committee for the meeting, which is being jointly organized by ACS chapters in Egypt, Ghana, and Nigeria: https://brnw.ch/21wIPYV #GreenChemistry #Sustainability
